UNSEEN ANALYSIS - ADVERTS (FOR PAPER ABOVE) KFC, ADIDAS and STELLA These clips were used in the June 2010 Exam and were used for analysis. You could use them to analyse how the ads use:
Here are various documents to help you revise - these include an overview of the exam, guidance on timing and technique, activities to help you revise for analysis, representation and audience, as well as a couple of exam papers, so you can familiarise yourself with them. Most of these can be downloaded and printed off.
Needless to say, these are all useless unless you do something with them and act on them. Revision should take a lot of time and involve a lot of time learning core ideas, terms, texts etc.
And here's the trailer, just to see if your initial ideas about the way the film represents Scotland are accurate:
And now for the Visit Scotland tourist ad linked to the film:
TEXT 2: (Film and documentary) Here is the trailer for NEDS:
Note: the director of this film is Peter Mullan - Mullan was born in Scotland, the youngest of eight. He was brought up on a rough council estate with an alcoholic father. He was briefly part of a street gang, before going ton to university. It is worth considering how this has influenced the way Scotland is portrayed in the film.
Here is an American documentary on Teenage Gangs in Glasgow from 2012:
TEXT 3: (TV) We looked at the opening of a New Tricks episode from October 2012 - you will need to track this down online and ask us for a copy. This offers a much more modern adn stylish image of Scotland.
One of the three questions in the summer exam for MS1 will be about how audiences use and respond to media texts and how producers make texts with specific audiences in mind.
To tackle this topic, you need quite a range of theory and ideas and will need to apply them to some case study texts and, possibly, to the unseen text you will analyse in the exam....
Here are some PPs to support the work will be doing for this topic.
The first accompanies the Who Is Your Audience? topic and focuses on the different ways we describe and define the audience, as well as considering the advantages and disadvantages of these approaches:
The next PP covers a range of theories and ideas mainly linked to how media texts affect us - are we active or passive media consumers? You may need to go through this slowly and more than once to ensure you get the basic ideas. Please come and ask for help, if you are struggling with any of these!
The next PP contains some texts that we will use to explore some of the key ideas about audience that you need to cover - use them in conjunction with the tasks in your worksheet...
Here are the two clips from TV SITCOMS that we will study to explore the way teenagers and old people are represented:
Here is a trailer for the BRITISH FILM,Harry Brown:
We looked at the opening scene (first 10 minutes) to explore the way teens and old people are represented at the start of the film. After Harry's friend, Len is assaulted by the local teenage gang and dies, Harry changes. We explored how his representation alters by looking at some key scenes - mainly the torture scene, where he tortures Marky, a gang member and then the scene in the subway, where he confronts Noel, the gang leader. Here is a link to a clip of the subway scene:
