Audience Topic

One of the three questions in the summer exam for MS1 will be about how audiences use and respond to media texts and how producers make texts with specific audiences in mind.

To tackle this topic, you need quite a range of theory and ideas and will need to apply them to some case study texts and, possibly, to the unseen text you will analyse in the exam....

Here are some PPs to support the work will be doing for this topic.

The first accompanies the Who Is Your Audience? topic and focuses on the different ways we describe and define the audience, as well as considering the advantages and disadvantages of these approaches:

The next PP covers a range of theories and ideas mainly linked to how media texts affect us - are we active or passive media consumers? You may need to go through this slowly and more than once to ensure you get the basic ideas. Please come and ask for help, if you are struggling with any of these!

The next PP contains some texts that we will use to explore some of the key ideas about audience that you need to cover - use them in conjunction with the tasks in your worksheet...

And, finally, a PP with three key texts that you will analyse over the next few weeks and use as your case studies for the exam:
